North Ayrshire Council Leader, Joe Cullinane’s report to the full council meeting has revealed that positive talks have been held between the Council’s leadership and the Scottish Government over funding to replace Ardrossan Academy.

The Ardrossan Academy project has been delayed due to a delay in the Scottish Government announcing the next phase of the Schools for the Future Programme. A new phase is expected to be announced over the coming months with funding available from 2021.

Details of the meeting between North Ayrshire Council and the Scottish Government were set out in further detail at the full council meeting as Saltcoats Councillor Jim Montgomerie tabled a question asking the Council Leader for an update.

Councillor Cullinane advised full council of the Scottish Government’s interest in the project being developed to replace Ardrossan Academy.

The Scottish Government also acknowledged the significant investment that North Ayrshire Council has made to its school estate in recent years with the opening of the Garnock and Largs Campus’ and multi-million pound investments in Kilwinning, Irvine Royal and Auchenharvie Academy.

The Councils refreshed 10 year capital plan doesn’t just include a replacement for Ardrossan Academy but also includes a new ASN a school, a replacement Moorpark Primary and a new Primary School in Montgomerie Park, Irvine.

A further meeting between NAC officers and Scottish Government officials is being organised to discuss the Ardrossabn project further.

In advance of the Council meeting, Councillor Jim Montgomerie said;

“Because of delays in the Scottish Government announcing the next phase of funding for new schools, the Ardrossan Academy replacement project has been delayed.

“The Council Leader and the Cabinet Member for Education are pushing to secure funds from the Government as early as possible in order to deliver this exciting project at the earliest date. A very positive meeting was held with the Government last month and I think its important that people in the Three Towns know that work is ongoing behind the scenes hence my question at full council.

“The Labour administration are investing a massive £80million in our school estate, an investment that will benefit our young people and our communities. The replacement of Ardrossan Academy is part of that and hopefully we can secure Government funds to deliver that as soon as possible.”
